Inventory and Clothing

Another one I answered in a forum I thought I would save and offer up.

Clothing and QB is a major hassle cause QB doesn’t have attributes for items so each size, color whatever would have to be a separate item – just too much a pain for it to be practicable.

I’m not saying this is the best way to do it, but my g/f runs a small clothing store, she buys from distributors and from thrift shops/yard sales and resells.

What I do for her is:

The distributor clothing gets entered as individual items and she keeps track of what sizes are on hand on paper, in QB we just sell the item and enter the size on the sales document. So when we buy a blouse 2-2-2 (meaning 2sml, 2med, 2lrg) we stock it as 6.

For the thrift store/yard sale stuff she buys for resale, I use generic inventory items and receive them that way.  Blouses, pants, skirts, dresses, suits, belts, etc etc That gives us a count of what is on hand in the category and an average cost.

On paper she tracks the thrift store/yard sale items by description since she sells a lot on ebay. We set up  an inventory numbering system for her paper list, B1…B34 for Blouse 1, blouse 2, blouse 34 etc.

It is a little cumbersome but right now she is just starting so it is working, if/when she gets more successful we will have to do something more detailed with some other accounting package since QB will be too much a pain to use and I don’t see them adding to the inventory module.

But that at least gives her an inventory asset value and count, and  COGS when an item is sold.
